A 48-year-old Gloucester County man was shot to death in 2020.

A Gloucester County man is expected to face trial on murder charges this month, and one of those who could testify against him is his co-defendant, according to court documents. The shooting stemmed from an “internet beef” between the victim’s son and another man, an assistant prosecutor stated in court in 2020. The other man, who was not charged in the case, brought Kaganzev into the dispute, which played out via text and video chats, the prosecution said.

Velez and Kaganzev traveled to the Cardonick residence in Clayton on Sept. 28, 2020, and when the elder Cardonick answered the door, Velez stuck a gun through the opening, authorities said. Defense attorneys previously challenged the murder charges, arguing the defendants’ goal was to intimidate someone, not to kill. The prosecution countered that Kaganzev recruited his co-defendant for the job because Velez had a “propensity for violence.”
