Self-awareness has been a constant feature in behavioral research, and one traditional test for this is the 'mark test,' an experiment in which a colored marking is applied to an animal's head which can only be seen in a mirror. In their study, the researchers set up an arena divided by a fence, with one side featuring a projection of a bird of prey on the ceiling. They observed 58 roosters in this setup, repeating the experiment thrice with each rooster.

Sonja Hillemacher and Dr. Inga Tiemann - in the chicken coop on the Frankenforst campus of the University of Bonn.was placed between the sections instead of the fence. Out of 174 trials, the roosters only issued 25 warnings, suggesting they did not perceive their mirror image as another chicken, potentially indicating self-recognition.
