A third of US households experience food insecurity: new tool

The new tool called the probability of food security calculates the probability that a household's food expenses will either match or surpass the minimal cost of following a nutritious diet.

A household's inability to consistently obtain enough food for each member to lead an active and healthy life is referred to as food insecurity. It can take many different forms, such as reduced food intake or hunger, or it might show up as an insecurity about not knowing when one's next meal will come from. Despite the nation's general richness and great availability of food supplies, there is a large and continuous problem with food insecurity in the United States.

Furthermore, the PFS is calibrated so that its estimates of the prevalence of food insecurity precisely match estimates derived from the USDA's Food Security Scale Score. The PFS reveals food insecurity dynamics that cannot be investigated using the nation’s current official measure of food issues, in particular, the likely duration and severity of food shortage episodes.
