There will be a Tiananmen Square ‘reckoning’ | Sky News Australia

FULL INTERVIEW: Journalist Max Uechtritz says he believes social media and technology is fuelling ‘resentment’ towards the Chinese government over its role in the Tiananmen Square massacre. Mr Uechtritz was in Beijing when tanks rolled in to quell a pro-democracy uprising in June 1989. His crew captured the moment where an unarmed man, colloquially known as ‘Tank Man’, faced off against a convoy of Chinese tanks.

The image is symbolic of how the Communist government brutally cracked down on China’s nascent democracy movement. There are no official figures on how many people died when the Chinese military opened fire on thousands of protestors but Amnesty International estimates more than 1,000 people perished during the mayhem, which took place on the 3rd and 4th of June.
