'A human is a machete': China's automated censors crank up ahead of Tiananmen anniversary

It's the most sensitive day of the year for China's internet, the anniversary of the bloody June 4 crackdown on pro-democracy protests at Tiananmen Square, and with under two weeks to go, China's robot censors are working overtime.

Two employees at the firm said censorship of the Tiananmen crackdown, along with other highly sensitive issues including Taiwan and Tibet, is now largely automated. As news of Bob Hawke's death sweeps through the country, the Chinese-Australian community expresses gratitude towards the Labor legend's promise to allow Chinese students to stay after the 1989 Tiananmen massacre.

That AI is terrifying. Maybe we should think again when we insist FB Twitter and such should be able to eliminate unsavoury content, we may be opening to way to censorship unintended.

The internet is dividing, and the choice boils down to China or the WestGeopolitical forces are tearing the internet in two, and many countries and companies will soon be forced to make a tough choice. I'll opt for the side that didn't build a great firewall, thanks. Post colonial white Western-European-American-Christians with guns cannot treat the rest of the world like they did the Native Americans!
