Toys “R” Us has sparked online backlash after releasing an ad created with OpenAI’s new video generation tool, Sora.

AI enthusiasts were excited to see AI being used for commercial purposes, but critics found the footage to be repulsive. It should be noted that this is the footage that was chosen for the final edit, meaning that these variants of Charles are, presumably, the best the AI could generate — the public hasn’t been shown Sora’s rejected output.Because there is no human touch behind AI-generated work, one of the most interesting ways to look at an AI-generated piece is to spot the evidence of the machine.

At this stage, proponents of AI-generated video must prove that the technology is worth the cost, and thus far, the output has been unintentionally unsettling. “Charles Lazarus was a visionary ahead of his time and we wanted to honor his legacy with a spot using the most cutting-edge technology available,” Olko said. “Our brand embraces innovation and the emotional appeal of Toys “R” Us to connect with consumers in unexpected ways. We aim to capture that nostalgic feeling and deliver it uniquely to Toys “R” Us kids of all ages.
