for how the consumer tech industry was going to evolve in 2024 and beyond. At the core of many of my predictions was AI and how it would change various industries. While video games have always used AI in different capacities, due to recent advancements I believe we’re going to see a more seismic shift in the coming years.
Since 1980, AI in games has evolved and been used in varying ways including simulation, combat, characters, storylines and more. But now with generative AI, these experiences are going to become even more dynamic.
I believe we are going to see this used in other aspects of gaming to create endless possibilities. NPC behavior is one area in which AI will be used to create a fundamental change. For example, imagine being able to go up to an NPC in the upcomingand it is not only able to remember the last conversation it had with you but also able to adapt its dialogue to you based on a mission you just completed or based on real-time dialogue you type to it.
Essentially it’s sci-fi sims with embedded AI. You work with your avatar to help it succeed by giving it instructions and advice, but what makes it interesting is that at the end of the day the AI avatar is an NPC, meaning you don’t actually control it, it has the final say. It is able to remember things, make its own decisions and even store assets that it can trade and sell on its own. You act more like an advisor than as a direct player.
While not being a direct player may sound odd at first, this is precisely what I love about this “1.5 player game.” Its passiveness makes it more accessible for everyone. As you get older, you have less and less spare time to play your favorite games. Not every 30- or 40-year-old gamer with kids is going to have the time to playallows them to play passively and check back in from time to time.
