New research reveals that PFAS chemicals found in nearly all participants of a study involving over 2,500 adults are linked to harmful blood lipid levels, increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. This extensive study, utilizing advanced mass spectrometry, solidifies the association between PFAS exposure and negative health effects, particularly among younger people, advocating for stricter regulation of these substances.
Researchers from the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases have found that the presence of PFAS chemicals in human blood, a common contaminant, is linked to poor lipid levels, raising the risk of heart disease. This conclusion stems from examining data of over 2,500 adults from Bonn, Germany, and Leiderdorp in the Netherlands, with PFAS detected in the blood of almost all individuals involved in the study.
“Our data shows a statistically significant correlation between PFAS in the blood and harmful blood lipids linked to cardiovascular risk. The higher the PFAS level, the higher the concentration of these lipids. Taken strictly, this is not yet a proof that PFAS chemicals cause the unfavorable blood lipid profiles. However, the close correlation supports this suspicion. It is a strong argument for stricter regulation of PFAS in order to protect health,” says the Bonn researcher.
Future studies could focus on specific areas of the body, the Bonn researchers suggest. “We looked at the blood levels. In a next step, it would make sense to investigate the occurrence of PFAS in individual organs,” Monique Breteler says.
