The new cameras use AI to detect not wearing a seatbelt or using a phone

A new type of speed camera which can tell if you're on you phone or not wearing a seatbelt which is powered by AI is being rolled out to 10 more UK areas.

National Highways launched the new cameras, powered by AI, in 2021, which can automatically detect drivers not wearing a seatbelt or using a phone at the wheel.Read More: Yorkshire households handed £3,000 DWP and HMRC boost from Monday The cameras are mounted to a vehicle and have multiple lenses, giving differing views of the driver and their passengers, according to the RAC.It means police can then contact the driver directly about their offence and in theory could issue fines and points on a licence.

It is part of plans to tackle dangerous drivers, in particular because those who use a phone at the wheel are much more likely to die in a crash. Police forces taking part in the new trial are Durham, Greater Manchester Police, Humberside in East Yorkshire, Staffordshire, West Mercia, Northamptonshire, Wiltshire, Norfolk, Thames Valley Police and Sussex.
