Why Earth's oceans are losing their blue color

It’s worth noting that the color differences may not be apparent to the human eye. We tend to see most of the ocean as blue. But the ocean’s actual color contains a mixture of wavelengths, going from blue to green. There’s even a tinge of red.The study’s lead author, B. B. Cael of the National Oceanography Center in Southampton in the UK, made a statistical analysis of the seven colors from the satellite, first checking on the changes in different regions over specific years.

When compared to a 2019 model from Dutkiewicz’s team, which focused on simulating oceans with and without greenhouse gases being added, there was a clear correlation. The 2019 greenhouse-gas-based model proposed that a clear trend would become visible in 20 years, reflecting color changes in over 50 percent of the surface of the planet’s oceans — a trend very similar to what Cael found when looking at the data from the satellite.
