Therefore, the increase in oxygen made it possible for multicellular, complex organisms to evolve, a fact that now seems to be substantiated by the new find.

The microfossils were found to resemble a kind of eukaryotic algae rather than the more basic prokaryotic life that existed before the Great Oxidation Event. Eukaryotes and prokaryotes are two of the primary domains of living organisms.
