“What we show is the first direct evidence linking the changing environment during the Great Oxidation Event with an increase in the complexity of life."
This development along with the growing availability of oxygen in the atmosphere led to the evolution of more sophisticated forms of life. Aerobic respiration, which produces energy far more efficiently than anaerobic processes and is present in all advanced life forms, depends on oxygen. Therefore, the increase in oxygen made it possible for multicellular, complex organisms to evolve, a fact that now seems to be substantiated by the new find.
The microfossils were found to resemble a kind of eukaryotic algae rather than the more basic prokaryotic life that existed before the Great Oxidation Event. Eukaryotes and prokaryotes are two of the primary domains of living organisms.
