The study was led by a team of researchers from the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, Cambridge University, and KU Leuven in Belgium. The details regarding theNeuropeptides enable communication between neurons not physically next to one another; their networks may be considered a wireless connectome. A connectome is a map of an organism's brain's neurons and the complex architecture of neural networks inside it.

"Neuropeptides and their receptors are among the hottest new targets for neuroactive drugs. For example, the diabetes and obesity drug Wegovy targets the receptor for the peptide GLP-1. But the way these drugs act in the brain at the network level is not well-understood," said Dr William Schafer from MRCLMB in a

The map illustrates where each neuropeptide and each receptor for those peptides functions in the animal's nervous system and depicts 31,479 neuropeptide connections between the worm's 302 neurons. The map was created by merging biochemical, anatomical, and gene expression information and determining whether neurons can interact with one another utilizing unique neuropeptide signals.
