from the Pew Research Center puts software engineers at the top of the list of jobs that generative AI tools like ChatGPT will impact most.

As engineering strongholds like coding and programming become more automated, deep data and domain knowledge, as well as the soft skills needed to apply that knowledge, remain in short supply. In order to be effective managers of generative AI tools, aspiring professionals and current engineers must focus on these areas. In today’s fierce competition for top talent, employers and job-seekers must focus on skills beyond programming.

These engineers must be able to do more than write prompts. They must think cross-functionally to understand where AI can fit into different departments’ workflows while still handling issues that remain valuable to organizations, like troubleshooting code errors, routing risks to the right experts and identifying gaps.

Enabling more business users to utilize no-code tools means that engineers don’t need to be involved in some tasks, thus freeing them to tackle the meatier technical challenges. For example, while nontechnical users can use these tools to build simple models, engineers can leverage those bespoke models and build larger applications that the whole organization can use to start to achieve the impactful outcomes that businesses want.
