New 'super melanin' cream may pave the way for anti-aging skincare

A condition known as oxidative stress is one of the key causes of poor skin healing and the development of chronic wounds. This occurs when the body produces an excessive amount of free radical species, notably reactive oxygen species . These free radicals induce molecular malfunction, cell damage, and abnormal, damaging inflammation.

Synthetic melanin, when applied as a cream, can promote faster skin wound healing. This application method also acts as a sun protection barrier and assists in the regeneration of skin injured by sun exposure or chemical burns.Melanin stays on the skin's surface after application and does not penetrate or absorb into the underlying layers.

“The epidermis and the upper layers are in communication with the entire body. This means that stabilizing those upper layers can lead to a process of active healing,” co-corresponding author Dr. Kurt Lu.
