The researcher explained that the new work indicated that getting too little sleep can rewire the brain to experience a strong antidepressant effect. He further noted that this serves as a crucial reminder of the profound impact that even seemingly insignificant activities, like one restless night, may have on the brain.

To study these effects, Kozorovitskiy and her colleagues devised a novel technique to cause acute sleep deprivation in mice without any genetic predispositions for mood disorders while ensuring the animals weren’t subjected to too much distress. The experimental setting had to be just uncomfortable enough to keep the animals from going to sleep, but not so uncomfortable that it would cause them significant stress.
