Subscribe now.The retina is a layer of neural tissue located at the back of the eye that plays a crucial role in the visual process. This key part of the eye is in charge of translating light into electrical signals that are transmitted to the brain, enabling us to see and understand images. It is this process that the new biochip recreates.

This is because it is flexible, made completely of non-toxic organic materials, and it functions with ions—that is, with charged atoms or molecules. As a result, it can be incorporated into biological systems far more effectively than silicon-based traditional semiconductor components, which are inflexible and limited to electron operations.

Taking the research a step further, Santoro's group is working on alternative methods for biolelectronic chips to communicate with human tissue, particularly nervous system cells. The biopolymers they utilized to create the artificial retina are particularly well suited for this application as they have the ability to mimic not only the three-dimensional organization of nerve cells but also their functionalities, such as information processing and storage.
