Join us as we explore some of the most famous military actions of the past to examine how modern drones could've changed the outcome.Drones are the culmination of many decades of research and development into uncrewed technology.

The plan was to use the highly maneuverable and versatile fighter-bombers to breach the prison walls and security buildings to help members of the French resistance imprisoned there to escape. Scheduled for execution, time was of the essence for prisoners — as well as for the pilots and bombardiers of the joint New Zealander, Australian, and British crews.

Six mini-submarines, called "X-craft," journeyed to the Norwegian fjords and had to navigate various underwater obstacles and enemy defenses like mines and submarine nets. Most of the craft were lost, damaged, or scuttled, with many crews killed during the action. As for the attack, armed or kamikaze underwater drones could have been employed to infiltrate the fjords and conduct the attack. This would reduce the loss of human life, such as that seen during the actual attack, for the Allied forces.and other capital ships and attacked the hulls under the waterline to devastating effect. Other drones could have provided distraction missions, post-attack damage assessment, and extraction of any human personnel needed for the mission.

While the U.S. troops never reached the embassy, drones could have also been used to monitor conditions on site and perhaps even performed precision strikes on hostage takers. After the rescue mission, drones would also have proved invaluable in ensuring personnel and hostages were extracted safely by tracking Iranian reaction and military movements.

Had drones been available then, the battle may have resulted in fewer casualties. As with other actions mentioned here, drones providing reconnaissance and real-time surveillance would have proved invaluable for aircraft and troops on the ground. Attack drones could have provided precision strikes of RPG emplacements and perhaps even provided cover for search and rescue units or even heavy-lift drones to recover wounded and dead troops.
