Trump's aversion to science and technology reflects his nostalgia for a supposedly simpler, better era that's at the core of his political message. It's unique for a president and dangerous, writes EliStokols.

Tuesday morning — alluding to the Boeing models involved in two calamitous crashes in six months — cast into vivid relief the puzzling, even perilous mind-set of a 21st-century chief executive so stubbornly change-averse and all but indifferent to technological advancement in an era of intense global competition.

Whatever the cause of the latest crash Sunday in Ethiopia that killed everyone on board, following the catastrophic accident in Indonesia in October, Trump waited until Wednesday afternoon to order the MAX models to be grounded indefinitely pending investigation. Fifty-one nations, including the United Kingdom, Australia, already had ordered the planes out of service, and members of Congress in both parties urged the administration to do so as well.

In his tweet Tuesday, Trump complained that planes are so complicated they require “computer scientists from MIT,” and added, “I don’t know about you, but I don’t want Albert Einstein to be my pilot.

It wasn’t until January that the Senate confirmed Kelvin Droegemeier, an extreme-weather expert, to serve as the president’s top science and technology advisor, leaving the job vacant for nearly two years. Trump didn’t nominate anyone until last August. “The core theme of this president and this campaign is the idea that you can turn back the clock, that you can ‘make America great again,’ that the answer for people worried about change is we’re going to stop it and reverse it — and that’s just not true and it’s just not possible,” said Buttigieg, whose generational appeal is part of his presidential pitch.

EliStokols Does Trump deny that a man with a penis is a man and a woman with a vagina is a woman? Does he deny that a fetal human is a human being?

EliStokols Note it is not Trump but the Democrats saying that we will have to give up flying in the name of “science”. GreenNewDeal

EliStokols He’s right about these dad-gummed newfangled flying machines. They should run on coal.

EliStokols Oh my G==. You people are NUTS. Get into a 757 Max and fly yourself somewhere and see how safe you feel for the duration of your flight. If you go down in a firey blaze. You asked for it! STUPID

EliStokols realDonaldTrump - the Luddite-in-chief. Ludditeinchief.

KatyTurNBC EliStokols Idiots. He was referring to the technology being ripe for hacks.

KatyTurNBC EliStokols And, then we have Space Force. Lol

KatyTurNBC EliStokols

EliStokols Ah jeez!!! What next?

KatyTurNBC EliStokols The Boeing 737 first flight was in 1967. Each new version incorporates improvements in materials, and experience in operations of millions of flight hours. trump doesn’t want to learn, refuses counsel from his betters, and hates that beyond his comprehension

EliStokols He wants to go back to the middle ages so that he can rule like a king.

EliStokols Don't put lipstick on a pig. Trump is an old fart ....a dirty old man that gossips like old women, who opened his flap about how planes used to be built better. But when? What the hell is he talking about?

EliStokols How about a thorough investigation instead of just grounding the airplanes?

KatyTurNBC EliStokols Turn off the auto pilot on Airforce 1 and show him why you want a real human pilot.

KatyTurNBC EliStokols Luddite-In-Chief

KatyTurNBC EliStokols Trump flies on Air Force One. Air Force One is the most technologically advanced Boeing aircraft to ever see flight.

EliStokols Is this an opinion piece or coveted journalism? I can’t tell anymore at this point

EliStokols People like Trump and the followers he attracts tend to be lower intelligence and have little formal education. They are threatened by science ad technology because they feel it is leaving them behind. Things like using a gas pump or an ATM machine challenges them.

EliStokols

KatyTurNBC EliStokols The aversion is because he’s a moron and that science stuff hurts his brain. His stupidity is dangerous to everyone.

KatyTurNBC EliStokols I hate trump but he has a point. The automatic safety systems crashed these planes. There should be a human override.

EliStokols I like how the Times chose a picture of the Air Force’s 757 to showcase their totally ridiculous “point”. Fun fact: Trump literally owns his own 757 🤡

EliStokols The El Segundo Times’ aversion to no-partisan reporting is why they can’t sell subscriptions for 99 cents.

KatyTurNBC EliStokols Does he watch reruns of Little House on the Prairie?

KatyTurNBC EliStokols OMG! And please don't get him started on those ding dang whirligigs!🙄

Yeah...like not cutting trees in the forest is a fire hazard...OR putting fear into the public about vaccines is a public health hazard...Or letting people camp out and crap all over the ground is a public health hazard too

EliStokols He’s so behind the times in every aspect. It’s like he just crawled out from under a rock. He will definitely go down in history as a laughing stock and the dumbest president in history.

EliStokols And liberals kill babies. What don’t liberals get about the science of human life? Explain that to me.

EliStokols I’ve seen people progress and rely on AI/technology. I have also watched them drive down a dark street with no headlights on because they thought their car was smart enough to always no when it’s night time 😲

EliStokols Stokols is an idiot

EliStokols trumptoodumb

EliStokols

EliStokols You're calling Trump averse to technology when he basically won the presidency by tweeting and posting on Facebook. Seriously, that's your take. Also people have died because the software wasn't updated. It's not your phone crashing, it's a plane, with people on it.

EliStokols

EliStokols Trump is basically a sociopathic caveman, a blubbering and grunting Orc.

EliStokols Like

EliStokols We want to move forward as a country; he is taking us backwards in so many ways and at so many levels.

EliStokols Ideally, science and technology make our lives simpler and better. Isn't that the entire point of it?

EliStokols Then there is this beautiful memo:

EliStokols The stone age is not something to aspire to.
