‘Machine vision’ is struggling to recognise darker-skinned pedestrians, and cost pressures could make things worse

There is a rule for dealing with computers: garbage in, garbage out. Put the wrong number of zeroes in your Excel spreadsheet and it will unthinkingly pay your staff pennies on the pound; train a self-driving car to recognise human figures by showing it millions of pictures of white people, and it might struggle to identify pedestrians of other races.

Darn white people and their racist *spins wheel* Self-Driving Cars!

Lighter objects reflect more light than darker objects, so they're easier to see. That's why road signs are on a white, not a black, background. This is pretty basic stuff.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that the technology might struggle more to recognise white people as a hazard to be avoided - hence the increased testing ? It might not recognise dark skinned people specifically as people, but it does easily see them as a hazard ?

Time to ban racist technologies like self driving cars

Get a life

So a computer system is imperfect AND you fail to gather a quote from those who created the system. Instead, you just decide to call them AND their *robots* racist. COOL GREAT JOURNALISM. Wish I could hear from the scientists who built the systems you are criticizing fakenews

So you teach a machine to recognize people by only showing them pictures of white people, and then you're shocked by the result?

Now the media is telling us private transportation is racist ! 😆😆😆

Stop with the Luddite bullshit. These systems recognize SILHOUETTES and PROFILES, and are not racist, etc. For fuck's sake.

machines and pollution are racist. what a world we live in

Small children and pets might be at greater risk too.
