Analysis: Republicans want Kaspersky, Huawei banned from sensitive university research projects

Eugene Kaspersky, the Russian anti-virus programs developer and chief executive of Russia's Kaspersky Lab, at his company's headquarters in Moscow.

The goal is to ensure it’s just as hard for Russian and Chinese government-linked hackers to steal important U.S. academic research as it is for them to steal government secrets, the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Jim Banks , told me. The bill — which is co-sponsored by Reps. Trent Kelly , Paul Cook and Don Bacon — is a further indication of how an effort that began with banning a few companies that posed cybersecurity risks to government computer systems is growing into an all-out battle to block numerous Russian and Chinese companies from access to American secrets.

“The response has been inadequate at best from the Department of Education, and meanwhile the threats continue to grow,” Banks told me. The federal government is also creating a committee to review cybersecurity and national security dangers posed by all federal contractors and to recommend banning the riskiest ones — including companies with ties to governments such as Russia and China that U.S. officials don’t trust.

I thought republicans were Russia

A wise precaution.

I tryied Kaspersky software but found no problems with it. They suspect its product merely because it is russian.

They're not wrong.

This seems like this should be a bi-partisan issue. Could they not find a Dem to co-sponsor? Universities & others providing support for sensitive federal research pertaining to nat'l security should follow reasonable precautions to mitigate the risk of cyber espionage.

How the hell are you going to protect secrets when your stupid diversity laws makes it impossible to stop or prevent Chinese, Russian scientists working in sensitive sectors and companies? You have painted your selves to a corner.

I thought the GOP loved China and Russia?

.

Good idea. They steal technology.

Huh?

lol yep;)

But the Republicans have no problem with a Russian puppet in the WH? Go figure...
