Lightning data speeds, with no signal delays, will be game changer for technologies such as autonomous transportation

The beauty of next-generation 5G wireless communications is that it will deliver data speeds capable of carrying the equivalent of 4K video over the cell-phone network.

“The biggest message from me is to incentivize innovators, startups, companies that understand how 5G is going to be different, to work with us and others to build the ecosystem,” said Fernandes, Rogers’ chief technology officer. That makes UBC a crowded place for such 5G research. Huawei Technologies, a competitor with Ericsson in producing 5G equipment, already has a research partnership with UBC, which it renewed in 2017 with a $3-million commitment to projects in advanced communications, including 5G.

“So you have the environment, the capability, the skill, the knowledge ,” Fernandes said. “It’s just a great place to do it.”
