In comparison to today's lithium-ion batteries, lithium-sulphur batteries offer greater energy per gramme thanks to the use of metallic lithium and sulphur. Even though Li-S batteries are very effective, at locating, extracting, and shipping lithium these processes have a big impact on the environment, thus it's still necessary to use as little lithium as possible.

Furthermore, the new design does not require nickel or cobalt, removing the need for minerals that have a significant environmental and social cost.Professor Majumder added that these advancements s are great first steps towards more widespread adoption of Li-S batteries and corresponding energy storage systems.

On the other hand, Professor Hill added that these developments could see almost immediate repercussions.
