The Federal Communications Commission mandated that all Communications Service Providers in the U.S.Essentially, with STIR/SHAKEN, those originating a call must authenticate and digitally “sign” a caller ID to indicate its legitimacy. Carriers receiving the call must then validate that signature before allowing it to proceed to a consumer.
As a result, others in the ecosystem, such as mobile operators and consumers, gain assurance that only vetted, legitimate calls are passing through.
