"All [the scammer] needs is a short audio clip of your family member's voice — which he could get from content posted online — and a voice-cloning program," the commission warned."When the scammer calls you, he'll sound just like your loved one.
A spokesperson for the FTC said the agency couldn't provide an estimate of the number of reports of people who've been ripped off by thieves using voice-cloning technology.
NPR listener baiting: “Did that problematic family member you've shunned for 3 years finally make the first move and reach out? Here's a paranoid excuse you can use to not pick up.”

Yet another reason why AI tech should be illegal. It's built on a foundation of plagiarizing artists, political deepfakes, non-consensual deepfake porn, and now scamming people by stealing friends' and family's voices. It all boils down to get-rich-quick schemes for tech bros.

Society as we know it is over.
Phone companies have the technology to stop scam calling. They could also use AI to detect AI calls before they go to our phones. Why isn't this being done? I'm guessing money somehow, some way.
