If you answer a phone call from an unknown number, let the caller speak first. Whoever is on the other end of the line could be recording snippets of your voice — and later using it to impersonate you in a very convincing manner.

consumers to beware of scam artists who are secretly recording people's voices in order to later pose as them and ask victims' relatives for money.

"You get a call. There's a panicked voice on the line. It's your grandson. He says he's in deep trouble — he wrecked the car and landed in jail. But you can help by sending money. You take a deep breath and think. You've heard about grandparent scams. But darn, it sounds just like him," FTC consumer education specialist Alvaro Puig wrote on the agency's site.

Vall-E maker Microsoft alluded to this problem, including a disclaimer in a paper demonstrating the technology that"it may carry potential risks in misuse of the model, such as spoofing voice identification or impersonating a specific speaker." The paper noted that if the tool is rolled out to the general public, it"should include a protocol to ensure that the speaker approves the use of their voice.

"Now we even mispronounce it, too, if we suspect someone else knows it," he told CBS MoneyWatch."It's like a password you don't share with anybody. It's a pretty easy way to circumvent this, as long as you have wherewithal to ask and not panic."

I never answer if IDK the number. If they leave no message I assume is not important and never call back.

Something to think about with banking using voice as authorization. Time to add more security!

and try to resist when picking up the phone: saying 'yes ...' that is a word you don't want them to have in your voice

Intolerable.

But after the caller speaks you’re going to say something, aren’t you? So the caller can still record said snippets….

Been going on for a long time

The best thing to do is not to answer any call from a number or person you don’t know whether it be land or cell phone. If it’s important the caller will leave a message.

51 former intel officials and most every DC newsroom said Hunter's laptop was Russian disinformation - 3 weeks before an election. But the bank records show wire transfers corresponding to emails on the laptop. Make the list of reporters ignoring this Biden family corruption.

Better yet, use an iPhone and set it so that it doesn’t ring at all unless they’re in your Contacts list. If they want to speak with you they’ll leave a message and you can call them back.

Change the accent to your voice or use a foreign language equivalent answer. Eg: English person answers in French or Spanish equivalent response. Financial institutes know the customers ethnicity, so if a dubbed voice has an accent when it shouldn't, flags can be raised.

If its a caller i dont know i always use a “hi how are ya?” In spongebobs voice

To everyone saying just don’t answer calls from unknown numbers - unfortunately, for certain types of work you have to answer calls from potential customers/clients who are always going to be calling from initially unknown numbers
