The federal Liberal government is joining the Opposition Conservatives in no longer allowing its members of Parliament to expense taxpayers for home internet services.

And government House leader Mark Holland's office said Thursday he will propose that the practice be ended for MPs of all parties, after Conservatives signalled their intention to do the same.

As for the Bloc Quebecois and NDP, the parties saw 11 and four of their MPs claiming such costs, respectively. No rules have been broken, but the Opposition whip's office told MPs that a new policy has been set for caucus, according to a recent email obtained by The Canadian Press. "With Canadians continuing to face a cost-of-living crisis, spurred in part by irresponsible government spending, we do not expect that taxpayers should be left paying the bill for the home internet of members of Parliament," Kerry-Lynne Findlay, the Opposition whip, said in a statement Thursday.

"The chief government whip has told Liberal MPs today that going forward, they should not bill for their own home internet expenses and for their staff," Alex Maheux, a spokesperson for Holland, said in a statement.

Why is Trudeau flying around every day campaigning on our tax dollars?

Why? I have worked from home since 2000. I have always invoiced my internet to my company. If they are “virtual” what’s the problem? If they have an office in parliament then this makes sense.

It's awful having to teach grown politicians about ethics and morals.

they were doing it for a while without saying anything, stopping now is just virtue signaling🤷

Always at the trough them freeloadin’ politicians. They are alll crooks. We just gotta elect the best of the crooks.

Well with the average family home fast approaching one million dollars. I’m sure everyone will feel better about their internet bill

Tory MPs decided they MUST NOT expense these bills. Liberal MPs told they SHOULD NOT expense these bills. ⓘ 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 ⬇️ 𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴

Dozens of MPs bill Canadian taxpayers for cost of home internetConservatives took the most advantage of the benefit, with 27 members billing for home internet, while 16 Liberal MPs claimed the benefit. Do we not pay them enough? 🙄 How many 'work from home' Bureaucrats have home internet paid for by taxpayers? The company I work for mandates that I maintain a home office, something that that has been a requirement for 20+ years. Rev Canada does not allow me to claim internet charges so MP's and govt workers should not be charging this back.
