I see people who care about gender diversity, and they try to include women on panels, or they make an effort to hire women into certain jobs. But the issue is that there are not enough qualified candidates to go around. That's where we need to put our attention. We need to make sure that the supply chain is fixed, that we have a diverse set of talented individuals with whom we can collaborate.
To quote an old veteran in the space, there’s no other choice but to ‘lean in’. And while we’re making progress, the technology space has more room to evolve. My 3rd advice would be, find that 1 person that believes in you! And co-create the opportunity and the aspirations together. You need that guardian on your side.
There are three fundamental factors that must be countered to attract more women to the tech world: 1)We raise girls and boys differently from birth—we have girls play with dolls, while boys build things with Legos; 2) There is a very dry approach in teaching math and sciences, causing girls to lose interest early on; and 3) The geek mythology promoted by media seriously influences women’s views of the sector.
Increasing female representation in tech is essential for equality. Women have historically been underrepresented in STEM fields, and still are today. It’s a problem for many reasons. Women are not an equal part of creating the technology that increasingly shapes our lives, and are being left behind in the job market. But other than that, it’s also about creating better tech! The world needs more brains, more creativity and more perspectives in the development of the technology of tomorrow.
I've had a lot of transformations in my life. I've seen what it's like to be a man and a woman. I have been homeless and I've founded companies. Those don't seem like they go together, but they're my personal experience. My son had type 1 diabetes, and I was shocked that it was still handwritten notes and doctors squinting. Not that I appreciated it at the time, but I built the first AI to treat diabetes by hacking his equipment.
Unfortunately, we continue to see news reports of women experiencing hostile work environments in the technology field. This is very real. I know women who have altered their career courses because of the hostility they faced at their respective workplaces. And, frankly, the time commitments in this field can be brutal to meet deadlines and create the optics to appear dedicated.
