Removing personal information and deleting accounts is a fiddly process, so it’s better to break it down into a few smaller steps and tackle them over time. Here's how you can downsize your digital footprint.

you were born, there’s a good chance you’ve spent either several decades online or have never known an offline world. Whatever the case, the internet and its advertising giants know a huge amount about your life.

Amazon, Facebook, and Google all have reams of data about you—including your likes and dislikes, health information and social connections—but they’re not the only ones. Countless murky data brokers that you’ve never heard of collect huge quantities of information about you and sell it on. This data is then used by other companies you’ve likely never heard of to nudge you into buying more stuff.

Among the biggest data brokers are Acxiom, Equifax , Experian, Oracle, and Epsilon. Some, but not all, data brokers let people opt out of having their personal information processed—this also depends on where you are in the world—but the process isn’t straightforward. You’ll often have to contact them via email, fill in online forms, and provide extra identification information.that contains their email addresses, links to their privacy policies, and info about whether they let you opt out.

By reading WIRED articles on Twitter 🤔

Explain to me how you can have an account with 10 Million followers and so little engagement? Isn't that embarrassing? Do you even care? Are your followers even real?

What before elonmusk does…in your opinion. Embrace it

Don't think providing your data to a data broker for removing all they have on you is good advice.

Hmmm. Why's Algorithm showing me this?

Recycling the same article several times a week gets accounts like Wired blocked for spam. BLOCKED!

Just the Internet? How about the whole thing?

Hi, I am a structural engineer from Iran who have many ideas. I have summarized some of my ideas on my twitter(I suggest look at the idea of generating electricity by gravity). I want to work with companies and investors. Do you want to cooperate?

Internet, not internet.

& DON'T EVER your FACE OUT THERE. HELLO, your face is a targeted victim for their gorgeous MachineLearning DeepLearning training datasets & etc etc. Then they can boast & boost revenues

Hey, trust me, Meta is VERY THICK SKIN. I DON'T WANT THEM from day1️⃣, but THEY come & harrass quote famous personality unquote😂

Nah, you just kinda don’t show up. It’s pretty easy actually. Your data ain’t worth much when it’s stale folks. Just turn away.

Does a writer who is trying to make it in the biz really want to delete themselves from the internet.

Thanks!

Apple?

I have never used the internet under my own name so there's that...

greedy greedy companies

Facebook won’t approved my business page for the last 3 months because I’m not worth trusting. They don’t know who I’m.

Most ppl dont want to delete themselves from the internet. They'd rather add themselves to as many platforms as they can lol.

taint the data ?

Sorry about that,I was able to recover my account with the help of Somuch_hackers on Instagram

'Opt Out From Data Brokers'... Considering the number of trackers on this article, that includes visiting Wired's website.

It's ok, am pretty sure amazon has absolutely no idea who I am. Hat's off to the makers of 'Dabangg' for getting two sequels though!

xeni For a lot of people, the best framing is in terms of “leaving less digital exhaust in the future” rather than “erasing old footsteps.” The article relegates “Future Protections” to the bottom, so it seems like an afterthought (“btw also lock the door when you leave the house.”)

i have the paper edition of this wonderfully written article, how terribly jurassic i must sound.

It was very tricky canceling my wired digital subscription too. The website challenged my request multiple times with password verification and the process was not very clear, when completed I did not get a clear confirmation of the cancellation on the screen or an email.

yeah not gonna happen if you're a content creator
