The Australian Federal Police will be given $88 million to bolster its cyber capabilities, including world-first legislation allowing AFP officers to break into computer networks in Australia and catch criminals on the dark web.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the new powers were needed to “track criminals in the darkest corners of the internet to protect our families and children”. Operators of critical infrastructure including power plants, telecoms and ports, will also be given $66 million to assess any vulnerabilities in their networks to better fend off cyber-attacks.
