Some systems are pushing 60 years old and built on ‘outdated technology’ that can no longer be maintained

OTTAWA — Newly released briefing notes for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau describe the dire state of federal computer systems, which deliver billions in benefits and are on the precipice of collapse.

The Canadian Press obtained the documents through the Access to Information Act, and much of the text has been blacked out because it is considered sensitive advice to government. Nowhere is the issue of antiquated systems more pronounced than Employment and Social Development Canada, which oversees child, parental, senior and employment insurance benefits.

“These aging platforms neither meet the desired digital interaction nor are capable of full automation, and thus are unable to deliver cost-savings through back-office functions.”

I don't know who he wants to impress with his new look but in any event it's pretty bad when you can't just be yourself.

hey if he can’t even shave what more do a good job?

Like he really cares.

“..won’t be an easy fix because of the money required..”.. Fed IT not worth fixing but money for terrorist-supporting regimes a-ok “Canada’s international assistance spending increased by 8.9% to CAD$6.1 billion in 2018, up from CAD$5.6 billion in 2017.”

no thanks to trudeau-castro, and now he wants to make it even MORE unsafe AND a health RISK to Canadians by allowing 5G

The refusal to incrementally invest in IT results in a situation called digital debt. Politicians and department heads have no idea how big that debt is currently, & even if they did, they’d have little interest in addressing it in a meaningful way, they’d be deer in headlights.

The Phoenix pay system fiasco is due to the implementation of a system not yet ready for prime time. Management had their eye more on the juicy bonuses they would get and not on QA. 🤨

Old systems are vulnerable systems; I bet hackers read this headline and are getting real excited

Let’s see...60 year old computers would date back to 2020-60=1960. I wasn’t born then...but I remember when computers started becoming a thing. Remember the first computers that took up entire floors in office buildings? Is that what we’re talking about? Or is this fakenews?

Oh no!! Another Phoenix payroll system problem? 🙄. It's still not fully fixed. Let's waste more tax dollars. Outsource all to SaaS/Cloud or India InfoSys. Let the professionals do it! 🤔

Everything is at risk with Trudope in charge.

Tendency to favour commercial-off-the shelf over home-grown even though COTS doesn't fit Govt benefits program features. Also $ incentive for industry to promote in-house solutions that end up being maintained by public servants! How much has IBM been paid post-Pheonix?
