The White House is circulating drafts of a proposed executive order that would address allegations of anti-conservative bias by social media companies

in front of a roomful of online conservative activists, and directed his administration to explore all “regulatory and legislative solutions to protect free speech and the free-speech rights of all Americans.” Just this week, Trumpthat he is “watching Google very closely,” citing the case of an engineer who has claimed the company fired him for his conservative views.

He added: "Although the government may be able to support and assist online platforms’ efforts to reduce hate and violence online, the government should not try to impose speech regulations on private platforms. As politicians from both sides of the political spectrum have historically urged, the government should not be in the business of regulating speech."

Concerns about harmful content online following last weekend's mass shooting in El Paso, Texas, could become part of the discussion around the draft order on tech bias. The suspected gunman has been linked to a racist manifesto that, shortly before the shooting, appeared on 8chan, a fringe website known as a hotbed of white supremacy. Online screeds tied to two other gunmen in mass shootings in California and New Zealand have also appeared on 8chan.

The administration could look to NTIA, the branch of the Commerce Department that handles communications policy, but that agency lacks regulatory authority and could simply convene interested parties to explore the issues.of whether tech giants are harming competition or stifling innovation,POLITICO Playbook newsletterBy signing up you agree to receive email newsletters or alerts from POLITICO. An executive order to address ungrounded paranoia?

it's not alleged asshole

That’s not fascist and authoritarian at all.

ScottWapnerCNBC There goes twitter ...

Oh, we’re trying to control private company’s free speech?

Good luck with that WhiteHouse

Finally!

Priorities

So a blatant violation of 1A.

WH wants his racist base to have a voice on social media! Cult45

Another EO to solve a nonexistent problem. Be Best. Don't let it delay your tee time.

Smart. If I was Twitter, I would cancel Trump's account. There are zero laws that require them to accommodate a known lying racist. And, there are no fees, so they can block anyone, anytime! Want to clean up Twitter, kick DJT out!

What color crayon are they using?

Guessing it will be as productive as his election fraud commission.

Or maybe it’s just that people are smart enough to realize that these conservatives aren’t worth following or listening to. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Whatever happened to government staying out of business? Like if they wanted to they can just use another app

Ummmm gun control first?

Welcome to the Trump-Reich

Politico should be on NOTICE for their bias

Good luck. His EO does not change the Constitution and 1A does not apply to social media. It will fail badly. Very, very, very badly.

👏👏

In other words, anti-white supremacists.

First goes the neighborhood and our communities now goes our freedom of speech...

rhonda_harbison The future of America’s free press.

That is one for the courts💩👺👹🤡

Ego in charge? Again? Crybaby!

OMG Trump and his minions are beyond paranoid! As with everything they overreact to nothing.

Sounds like an unlawful abuse of power to me.

Silicon Valley social media companies are likely drafting a response, something along the lines of “go stuff yourself”.

Dictatorship pure & simple & led my an incompetent fool

🤣🤣🤣 sounds like they’ll have to close the accounts of the majority of pissed off Twitter users! It’s NOT the platform, idiots!

So.....they do realize this is a violation of the first amendment?

Sounds like the Cheeto in chief doesn’t want any interference with the Russians interfering.

🍿

Unconstitutional. First Amendment.

So this is where it starts? These social media companies are a key form of communication for millions. The Government knows this. If we were a fascist regime, they'd just take the company. Of course they'd need to set up their laws and court systems first. Looks like a duck

This is worrisome...censorship by the government is dangerous precedent

We’re North Korea now? Wtf?

Can’t wait to see Facebook and Twitter suing the Trump Administration

'Like us! It is henceforth ILLEGAL to not smash the like button on our every thought!'

This is absolutely asinine. How about if you don’t like people taking down your stuff, you actually put stuff up that’s real instead of pizzagate where people get shot at. FFS — get a life.

This would be a Hitler type action

Facts are pesky things.

This is chilling. Had Obama done this...

What about The Trump Broadcasting Authority A.K.A. Fox News.

Seems fairly Stalinist to me

To quote my buddy FloriduhBrewer

It’s not about anti conservatives...White House wants to silence anti trump media. Take this crap to court immediately...restraining order.

migmodig

Off to court we go.

i think the media should be allowed to have whatever opinions it wants to have and if you don't like it, don't watch it. find a channel you like.

So sad, Trump can’t handle the kitchen from social media by trying to take executive action, really, so sad

Sounds like suppression of opponent voice! ABCWorldNews pbsnewshour

😂😂😂😂 Lordy aren’t they the pot calling the kettle black?
