Drivers are confused about Level 2 automated technology, new reports by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety show.

One study looked at system names, among the first ways drivers learn about a feature. The goal was to understand how a system’s name can influence perceptions of capabilities on the road; the study found how the names manufacturers use for these systems can send the wrong messages to drivers regarding how attentive they should be.

One name in particular seemed “to over promise” when it comes to the degree to which drivers can shift their attention away from the road, the institute said. Tesla’s Autopilot “signals to drivers that they can turn their thoughts and their eyes elsewhere,” the survey found.
