Editorial: Aviation efficiency gains and innovation will not be enough to limit emissions growth. Demand for air travel needs to be damped

“Come on, stop calling us polluters.” That was the shocking message of denial from the head of the International Air Transport Association at a summit that took place this month as it emerged that rising numbers of passengers are shunning flights because of the climate emergency. Consumers are voting with their feet. Too many perhaps for barely profitable airlines, but too few to shift the corporate inertia surrounding an environmental crisis.

Heathrow is quite literally the worst airport I've ever been to, and I've been to many. I actually book flights to intentionally avoid going through Heathrow airport no matter what the additional time and money it costs to do so.

guyshrubsole Currently costs far more (about 5x price?) to go to Europe by train than by air. That needs to be reversed, for starters!

Frances_Coppola One thing that Johnson was right about, albeit for all the wrong reasons. Although he then didn't have the courage of his convictions when it came to a vote, of course.

Let's ban First and Business class while we're about it. That leads to an immediate efficiency gain of 30-40% on long-haul. So 30-40% fewer flights, 30-40% lower carbon emissions per passenger. And the only cost is a bit of inconvenience for some of the 1%. GeorgeMonbiot

I personally think Heathrow should expand and envelope the whole of LONDON...the whole, 5,000 runways; all the pollution you can breathe.. and drone shows every Friday. People would be so happy.🤣

Stopping Heathrow expansion to save the planet is as dumb an idea as recycling plastic bags. In fact, Heathrow allows efficiency in air travel because it serves as a hub. You people's virtue signaling needs to catch up with science.

Disagree totally. Expansion of Air travel is much needed economic growth. Jets/planes emit less toxic emissions compared to 50 years ago. Jet development will continue to improve environment effect.

🤣

British politics now is a shambles, we have a choice of Buffoon Boris or Calamity Corbyn & a load of egos on the back benches. The mother of Parliaments needs more grown up children & soon .. we are a laughing stock, Boris will kill the UK & ensure it's break up, wake up to that

“75% of all flights in the United Kingdom come from 15% of the population. It is the better-off who can afford to fly all year round. They are behind the 40% rise in holiday flights in the last decade – an astonishing 11m extra trips.” infrequentflyersclub

If they improved the rail link into London from Luton airport and they would not need another runway.

Seriously? Really who hire at The Guardian? He or she should be fired.

Its time we had yet another public enquiry ( the 25th ? ) into this runway. If its one thing the British are world leaders at its fudging a decision for as long as possible. Plus you can never have enough judicial reviews if you really want to drag on for an additional few years

The communists won the Cold War.

Are you naïve or lying. Stopping the expansion of Heathrow will have no impact on the world climate. Every plane that would have landed on the new runway will find its way to another 'hub' airport. The economic benefits, however, will go with the planes, to Paris and Frankfurt.

By the time it's finished China will have built hundreds of new airports.

Fuck the guardian giving recording equipment out

Pish. Build it - and built it now.

Bullshit
