If you are one of the many people frustrated by self-service checkouts, you had better get used to the technology because Coles has announced it’s going to double down on automation. 9News

Supermarket giant Coles has announced it plans to cut $1 billion in costs from its business over the next four years to offset rising costs related to factors such as energy and wages.

"Smarter Selling is expected to deliver $1 billion in cumulative savings by FY23 through initiatives including the use of technology to automate manual tasks and simplifying above-store roles to remove duplication, allowing Coles to offset the impact of rising costs including energy and labour," the release stated.in up to a dozen supermarkets across Victoria which broadcast every action to the shopper and recorded the transaction on file.

"When they kick in we'll see another level of cost reduction,” Coles chief executive Steven Cain said in a media call. Mr Cain said he expected "further reductions in manual operations" throughout stores and supply chain, while also saying the company would not hesitate to close unprofitable stores. The supermarket giant will also look to grow its Coles Own Brand range and Wellness Road range of health foods.Following the lead of Woolworths’ small format Metro stores, Coles plans to meet the growing demand of time-poor consumers who are willing to pay more for convenience.

More jobs lost! We need to add company tax for every auto unit that replaces people!!!!

Target is doing it too, they have replaced all checkouts in the Perth city store with self-service registers. Online shopping is looking better...

the thieves won't like it with doubling down but the store should also put bags behind counters instead of have them freely to grab and place items in bag and walk out without paying to also save more losses.

😒

We'll sort of glad I never shop at Coles

Scabs

I like them, I prefer to pack my own bags, although when doing a full shop it's squishy & no room. woolworths put the scales back on and it literally takes an extra 5-7 mins. 'please remove last item' 'please place item in bag' takes forever to weigh & register. Can't stand it.

Unlabelled advertising.

they are useless for a weeks shopping.

So are they going to drop all their prices since they’ll be saving so much in labour costs?

And I will continue not to use it or go elsewhere

They have like 3 out of 10 check outs open at any given time and then when you want to use them and go to the 12 items or less whatever aisle they turn you away for having too many anyway 🤷🏽‍♀️

I’m over the bloody things telling me to place the item in the bagging area, when I have! It’s going to get smashed if it keeps happening, I assure you! 🤬🤬

You don’t double down you double up

I only bought some juice

Can't wait until all staff lose their jobs and the youth have fewer prospect for employment, and I'm faster than the so called 'trained' staff anyway... Bring them on

Self service is really good actually! Why not have this service it does save a lot of time rather then waiting in line with one or two things behind a giant trolley !!

Avoiding self service checkouts because I think I’d prefer to help someone keep their job.

woolworths another opportunity for you guys to improve your numbers. Listen to your customers, don’t fuck it up like Coles

So why all the price increases if they’re going automated? we are already serving ourselves, normally only two staff member at the checkout at any given time one doing 3 jobs, serving, self service and service desk, Another person to make sure everyone pays 20c for plastic bags.

I’ll shop somewhere else, if coles can’t support Aussie jobs then I’m not going to support them

Pretty simple won’t shop at Coles

Omg

I'll go somewhere else

Why bother when they dont work half the time anyway

better than getting stuck in long lines waiting for overly-slow checkout workers

Well they will lose us in the majority then, happy to pay some more if it supports honest hands on work and the multitude of good thing's downslope that arise from it

Who was it recently that suggested that supermarkets would offer training and careers for young folk ? I am trying to remember the name of the particular Liberalaus expert on future employment patterns 🙄

sometimes i wish they had it in IGA where i live, some of those girls just wont shutup an serve customers.
