Lost luggage is the bane of air travel, so can better tracking technology address the issue?

Alec ThomasInvestments in tracking technologies, Sita says, are paying off.that goes around your bag handle. This means each bag can be scanned automatically by machines as it weaves its way through the airport system."You could assume that of the 150 million bags we're moving every year, each one is getting a tag," says Gareth Joyce, an executive at Delta.

Another contributory factor could be the complexity of the handling system. At some airports, airlines employ their own handlers, but at others the handlers are independent and contracted to multiple airlines. With many travellers going island-hopping, that sometimes led to lots of bags going astray. It's an experience passengers visiting small airports in Europe may also be familiar with.- aimed at making airlines and airports take better care of our luggage. Bags must now be checked as present and correct at several key points along the journey, explains Iata's Andrew Price, including when they are loaded on to the plane and when they enter the transfer system at airports.

"Considering that baggage is perceived as quite a dull area …there's actually a massive amount of quite interesting technology and investment going on," explains Mr Price.

BBCWorld It hot only can, it MUST, now that the technology DOES exist to build a rail tunnel under the Bearing Strait, they can lose too much business if they don't get their shit together

It’s behind you!

BBCWorld Usually blame ground staff

Poor pay for baggage handlers

For shits and giggles?

BBCWorld Two words....human error. 😆

Come on BBC, you cant be that stupid... oh wait you are... nothing to do with the airlines, its airports and ground handlers.

Because they employ useless pathetic people to do the joke

BBCWorld Crack in logistics

BBCWorld FedEx or UPS should be running all baggage handling operations at airports. What percentage of packages go missing while in their custody? I’d bet it’s quite low!

Would be interesting to see the mountain of bags that never get returned.

BBCWorld Oh what a coincidence, just movedto Italy, arrived last Wednesday and just now got my luggage after a huge argument, a claim and my luggage is completely busted and torn. They were nice enough to zip tie my zippers together 😡😡🤬🤬🤬

Last winter a bag fell of a luggage trolley onto the apron at Kittila, baggage handling that day was chaos and we were delayed over 2 hours waiting for loading - I pointed the bag out and they still left it there!

BBCWorld Because they can.

A couple of years ago check-in failed to tag my case fortunately I had an address label on it. I was asked at the departure gate to identify my suitcase. Well done Manchester Airport!

Probably because some baggage handlers don't really care about your baggage or what happens to it. The state it can appear in when it reaches the carousel is evidence of this. Wrecked.

BBCWorld Job security

BBCWorld 25 million a year?It's a huge number.

Theives vagabond and incompetence strikes a chord.

BBCWorld Strange! Airport Minimum Connect Times are calculated on bag delivery times; it’s often squeezed by airports/airlines to improve schedule connectivity disregarding the bag being able to connect and/or airlines not delaying a connecting flight adequately to allow bags to connect.

Because they don't give a shit about you luggage maybe?

How many are stolen by the handlers.

Shouldn't this be 'How' instead of 'Why'? Or are they doing it on purpose?

Because they can.

Perhaps we should increase the penalties they face when baggage goes astray.

I bet they wind up wherever the lost socks go...

Whenever I hear the British Airways music (‘The Flower Duet’ from Delibes’ ‘Lakmé’), I sing ‘We’ve got your bags, we won’t give them back’. Used to make my daughters laugh, albeit embarrassingly.

Mislay huh...

It is probably cheaper to throw money at the few people who complain loudly than actually try to keep track of every bad?

Incompetent and/or thieving airport employees.

Staff not giving a shit

Because sh** happens.

BBCWorld Because they dont care....

How the f**k do you lose 25 million bags

For fun

Why does the BBC still drag single mothers through the court system who cannot afford to pay their Gestapo tax?

Because they overfill the space on the plane, the pilot then refuses to fly so it gets taken off and thrown on next available flight, had this last year and even though insured got nothing because they found it within the time period allowed by insurance!Had 2 days with no case!

You really don't want to know. It'd be helpful to know what the proportion of accidentally lost bags to 'accidentally!! (nudge, nudge)' lost bags is. The answer's there somewhere!

pedant Airlines don't lose the luggage, baggage handlers do.

It's rarely the airline, but they get the blame. Most losses are due to airport automated handling breakdowns or airport manual handling. The airlines have zero control but 100% of the blame.

Lazy incompetent staff. This includes management.

what percentage of the total number of bags is that? and from which countries have the highest loss?
