It seems increasingly likely that, when the details of the deal eventually emerge, they will include the creation of a common architecture for content developers. If this does happen, and an architecture that works on both platforms is created, it could create much-needed ballast for both companies against the intensely competitive gaming industry landscape.
The implications of this are incredibly exciting. Removing some of the friction currently inherent in producing high quality, innovative games, and then bringing that content to market is likely to have a very positive impact. When you’re talking about an industry as creative as gaming, it could shake things up so that the creative geniuses who make the games are able to produce more or even take bigger creative risks with the content they create.
Obviously, this would be fabulous news for Sony and Microsoft, but it’s also music to the ears of developers and, crucially, gamers themselves. Sony and Microsoft are thought to have entered into this partnership in order to better equip them to compete with the likes of Amazon and Google, which makes perfect sense.
Whatever the motivation behind this deal, I believe it can only be a good thing. Ultimately it will be the gaming community who will gain the most from all this in the form of more and possibly even better games.
