Officials say the technology will allow them to shoot down unmanned aerial vehicles from the North but not all experts are convinced.

South Korea has announced plans to deploy lasers to shoot down drones sent by North Korea.South Korea will begin deploying drone-melting laser weapons designed to shoot down North Korean unmanned aerial vehicles this year.

The South's "ability to respond to North Korea's drone provocations will be significantly enhanced" by the laser weapons system, DAPA said in a statement.An incursion of drones into South Korean airspace triggered criticism of the South's air defences as it tries to curb the North's evolving nuclear and missile threats.

"Laser weapons have not yet been put to practical use worldwide, and further verification and more time are needed to determine whether they can be utilised as a practical weapon system," he said.
