AI speed cameras that can 'spy inside' cars are set to be rolled out across the UK to catch drivers using mobile phones or failing to wear seatbelts.

AI speed cameras that can 'spy inside' cars are set to be rolled out across the UK to catch drivers using mobile phones or failing to wear seatbelts.

Last year police cracked down on drivers with a new van that has an AI camera mounted on it, made by Acusensus . This is a different model to the 'Redspeed Sentio' unit New artificial intelligence software then analyses the images and flags if a driver is using a mobile or not wearing a seatbelt - with 'violation packages' then sent to police who can prosecute the driver.

'This kind of intrusive and creepy surveillance which treats every passer-by as a potential suspect is excessive and normalising it poses a threat to everyone's privacy.

The camera snapped 117 people using their mobile phones while driving and 130 in cars without seatbelts after being installed on the A30 near Launceston in Devon.Other types of hi-tech camera that can catch drivers using a mobile phone are being tested by different police forces. Jack Cousens, head of roads policy at the AA, said traditional road policing remains important as cameras cannot detect other motoring infringements, such as drink driving.

As of 2022, new laws were introduced to ban drivers from using their phones to take photos or videos, scroll through playlists or play games. Laws had previously banned motorists from using their phones for communication purposes, but rules have since been updated to ban the holding of phones for any reason.
