In 1996 and 1997 Cueva took first place nationally for grades 7-9 at ExploraVision for her projects, The Light of Nature: Genetically Enhanced Bioluminescent Organisms from Inlet View Elementary in Anchorage, and in 1997 for her project, ORACLE: Optical Revolution and Contact Lens Enhancement at the Central Middle School of Science in Anchorage.

"I'm a professor now, and my job involves many of the same skills I used in ExploraVision – visioning, research, creativity, persistence, teamwork and passion," said Cueva."Many of the skills I learned in ExploraVision were directly relevant to my academic career, both as a student and now as faculty."
