A new technology being trotted out to retailers uses cameras try to guess your age, gender or mood as you walk by. The intent is to use the information to show you targeted real-time ads on in-store video screens.

showed off video screens that can be placed in malls or bus stops and try to tell if someone is wearing glasses or sporting a beard, which in turn can be used to sell ads for new frames or razors.

Above the door handle is a camera that can try to guess ages and track irises to see where you are looking, but Walgreens said those functions are off for now. The company said the cameras are currently being used to sense when someone is in front of the cooler and count the number of shoppers passing by. It declined to say if it will turn on the other functions of the camera.

For instance, if many people are eyeing a not-so-healthy dessert but not buying it, a store could place it at the checkout line so you see it again and "maybe your willpower breaks down," said Ryan Calo, a professor at the University of Washington School of Law and co-director of its Tech Policy Lab.

I spent many years in retail and am convinced most of this is technology for the sake of technology. Marketing and IT execs trying to justify their existence.

Thats invasion of privacy. If its not a theft deterrant then its a privacy issue look it up in the constitution.

Hijabs for everyone

So i will be wearing a ski mask and sunglasses then

Not good. How long then until store cameras decide for you what they will present to you for sale? I already get 'suggested' coupons from Sobeys. Wait until stores 'guess' my age and deny me when my Froot Loops are on special because I am old.

Oh I can’t wait for the reaction of the those who believe in gender identity.

You mean 'gender', right?

Given the technological miracles that happen virtually every day I can see cameras being able to guess someone's age but good luck on the 'sex'.

Not gonna work. You have Males getting offended if you call them sir.

All of Canada’s genders ... wow that’s some recognition software.

I don’t buy anything obnoxiously advertised.

The solution is to not shop in processed food sections (cans boxes frozen and dairy) ... If your groceries have a label, its not real whole food. Noone is paying to track ID and upsell fresh veg and meats. Its big brands that pay to advertise their pseudo-foods

Maybe that will open the eyes of some of the more “confused” members of society. Just saying.

That is stupid and a waste of money! Also I don’t want to be on your camera and it better signed so people know about the cameras.

So stores can’t afford to buy their own climate friendly refrigerator but want to invest in cameras that guess age and sex

doesn't this violate privacy issues?

Ageist, Transphobic, and generally problematic. Can't have that.
