I focus on working with leaders to drive digital transformation within their organizations, which includes prioritizing internal upskilling and development programs to build expertise in emerging technologies within their teams. Recently, I have also been speaking with several mentees and others who are feeling the need to chart their own personal development above and beyond what they are finding from their current employer.

In an era defined by rapid technological advancements and the constant emergence of new tools, the need for lifelong learning and intellectual curiosity is more crucial than ever. The World Economic Forum's2023 highlights that 44% of workers’ skills will likely be disrupted in the next five years, emphasizing the need for continuous self-education.

In this article, I share some advice regarding the importance of embracing continuous skill development and how to go about it.The modern workplace continues to evolve. Traditional career paths have been replaced by more dynamic trajectories, necessitating continuous upskilling and reskilling. Meanwhile, the pace of change continues to increase. In 2021, aof over 3,000 global executives found that the pace at which work skills became obsolete had increased by 70% during the Covid pandemic.

The 2024 Career Optimism Index also highlights a gap between the investments companies are making in development and the impact they are having on employees. Ninety percent of employers report support for development, while only 69% of employees agree that this is the case. The takeaway for leaders is that we must do better.It has never been more important to develop continuous learning skills than it is today.

While companies should provide resources and support, it is up to each of us to take charge of our own personal development. Here are a few ways I recommend you take ownership of your personalized development plan.In other words, dedicate specific times in your schedule for learning and skill enhancement. Treat this time as a priority.This will be a roadmap for your learning journey. Outline your goals, the skills you want to acquire and the steps you need to take to achieve them.
