I've been managing people for a long time. Trust me, it was a steep learning curve when I first started. Being a manager is a huge responsibility, and the pressures have only increased over the last several years. In a June 2023 Gartner, Inc., 77% of employees said it's become more important to receive support from their manager. The same report found that employees were over 15 times more likely to be high performers with an effective manager.

True growth and success in a leadership position lie in flipping the priorities. Instead of going to work and thinking about projects, you need to focus on the people. Yes, you're still responsible for the output of your team. However, for that work to get done, you're also responsible for making sure your team is built effectively, has the right tools and technology, and is set up for success.

Over time, the needs of your team and your organization evolve. Leaders must continue to examine business needs and update their staffing plans accordingly. To be a strong coach, you need to constantly monitor and identify who's in the right position, who needs to be adjusted and how to bring new talent into the team. Recognize which skills are needed to keep up with—and keep ahead of—the industry.
