Almost 100 million people are under heat-related warnings on Friday, as a persistent heat wave hangs over major cities in the Northeast and Midwest and forecasts show a scorching weekend in some areas with a heat index above 100 degrees Fahrenheit., the National Weather Service warned that parts of the Midwest and Ohio Valley will see the most intense heat on Friday while the heatwave expands toward the Mid-Atlantic region.

The heat index—a metric showing how hot the weather really feels—in Ohio’s major cities like Columbus, Cincinnati, and Dayton is set to be above 100 degrees on both Friday and Saturday. The Mid-Atlantic region will feel the worst of the heatwave over the weekend and the high temperatures combined with humidity are likely to push the heat index as high as 110 degrees in some parts of the region.: We’re launching text message alerts so you'll always know the biggest stories shaping the day’s headlines.
