A study led by Cameron Jones revealed that people struggle to differentiate between GPT-4 and human agents, with GPT-4 surpassing human performance in nearly 50% of cases.GPT-4 models have surprised users due to their innate ability to gauge written prompts and fetch suitable responses in several languages. This quality of the bot seems to perplex most people, so much so that they can hardly distinguish between a bot and a human.
Cameron Jones first conducted the study under the supervision of Bergen, Professor of Cognitive Science at UC San Diego. “The idea for this paper actually stemmed from a class that Ben was running on LLMs,” Cameron Jones, co-author of the paper, told“In the first week, we read some classic papers about the Turing test and we discussed whether an LLM could pass it and whether or not it would matter if it could.
In the process, a human interrogator interacted with a “witness.” The interrogator would simply ask questions and determine whether a human or an AI model answered.
