Researchers aim to revolutionize ORs with their OR Black Box platform, enhancing safety, compliance, and efficiency with AI analytics.

The OR Black Box is a system comprising a tablet, microphones, and cameras, which analyzes over half a million data points per operating room daily.A New York-based medical technologies firm aims to make operating rooms more transparent, precise, and predictable with a ‘black box’ to monitor surgical procedures.

“Our goal is to replace dogmas and traditions with data-driven decisions. To promote a culture of high reliability, team collaboration, and psychological safety,” said Dr. Teodor Grantcharov, the founder of SST, on the company’sThe OR Black Box developed by SST isn’t an actual box but rather a system comprising a tablet, one or two ceiling microphones, and up to four wall-mounted dome cameras. This setup can reportedly analyze over half a million data points per day for each operating room.

Surgical safety checklists are designed to prevent errors and improve safety in the operating room. However, some of the implementation barriers are resistance to change and ineffective communication. The OR Black Box enhances team communication through non-punitive evaluation, addressing these challenges.
