The blue half of Manchester went wild when Raheem Sterling slotted home what it thought was a last-gasp winner against Tottenham but pretty soon its entire world crumbled around it.
The goal would have given the Sky Blues a 5-4 aggregate victory in their Champions League quarter-final and sent them through to the final four, but while they were going bonkers, the VAR intervened. Replays showed Sergio Aguero, who set up Sterling, was offside and the goal was taken off the home team. City won the match 4-3 but Spurs went through to the semi-finals after scoring more away goals in the tie as the aggregate was locked at 4-4.
After Sterling found the back of the net but before the goal had been taken away, Man City sent out this tweet. It was so excited it couldn't think straight, let along type properly. But moments later when the VAR became Tottenham’s saviour, it was a completely different tale. In the ultimate act of schadenfreude, Man City haters from across the internet delivered the most brutal replies as ecstasy turned into agony for Guardiola and Co.
The tweet went viral, receiving 11,000 comments, more than 85,000 retweets and being liked more than 167,000 times. People just couldn’t get enough of rubbing City’s nose in its catastrophic failure.
