We're just days away from finding out more details of AMD's Ryzen 9000 Zen 5 desktop processor plans, which are rumored to launch as early as July with. However, we've been guessing till now as to the naming scheme AMD would take as well as more detailed specifications, but this seems to have been confirmed by Gigabyte in a recent leaked document and other sources, with the Ryzen 9 9950X apparently being the new flagship, presumably with 16 cores.
This would indicate that AMD is perhaps relying purely on the tweaks made to the Zen architecture to boost performance, rather than higher frequencies or larger cache sizes. All of the new CPUs will be compatible with existing Socket AM5 motherboards, with no changes to cooler compatibility or memory support, making for an easy drop-in upgrade.
However, we already know that AMD will be announcing new 800-series chipset motherboards next week at Taiwan's Computex event alongside details of its Zen 5 Ryzen 9000 CPUs, so there will be a new generation of refreshed motherboards too. Existing motherboards will likely need a BIOS update to support the new CPUs.
AMD's CEO Dr Lisa Su will take to the stage at AMD's keynote opening talk at Taiwan's Computex trade show next week and it's believed the company will reveal its Ryzen 9000 series Zen 5 processors for the first time.
