FILE - The OpenAI logo is seen displayed on a cell phone with an image on a computer monitor generated by ChatGPT's Dall-E text-to-image model, Friday, Dec. 8, 2023, in Boston. OpenAI, one of the leading companies developing artificial intelligence, is continuing its public commitment to safety as it tries to push the technology to new heights and maintain its spot as a world leader in the industry.
Safety fears are one of the biggest issues facing the development of AI and expanding its uses across the economy, gaining the attention of lawmakers and regulators and piling pressure on companies to take those concerns seriously. Most of the biggest developers have laid out plans to install safety guidelines or signed onto agreements promising to avoid some of the most dire scenarios from playing out.
Misinformation is one of the most clearly identifiable risks facing AI, but there are also other warnings about dangers that range from apocalyptic to total economic upheaval that costs millions of people their jobs. “The ethos right now, it seems, in Silicon Valley is to just go, go, go because you need to keep up with the competition and try to get to the front of the pack in this new paradigm. But I really worry that in doing so there'll be a lot of harms along the way, just as there were a lot of harms in the social media space,” Wihbey said.
Experts and advocacy groups have pushed Congress to avoid letting the moment slip by like what happened with social media and act while there is still an opportunity to minimize the damage.
