Humans have dreamt of everlasting life since the dawn of recorded time. The ancient Greeks envied the immortality of their gods, and those gods occasionally bestowed immortality on special humans. Greek literature was influenced by the story of Gilgamesh, a Sumerian ruler and hero who sought immortality. The ancient Egyptian pharaohs built massive pyramids and elaborate underground tombs to preserve their bodies and their possessions for what they hoped would be eternal life.
There is not yet a scientific consensus that we are on the cusp of being able to extend human life substantially, but that consensus may not be far off. The amount of resources dedicated to the challenge is climbing sharply.A landmark experiment which may make the difference is the Robust Mouse Rejuvenation programme being funded and run by the Longevity Escape Velocity Foundation.
Brain preservation is the idea that when we die, our brains are preserved and stored for as long as it takes for human technology to reach the point where they can be restored to full working order. The more familiar version of brain preservation is called cryonics, and involves freezing the brain of a patient whose body can no longer sustain life.
