The “Appeal To Heaven” flag, also known as the Pine Tree flag, is sometimes used as a symbol of support for former President Donald Trump and religious conservatism generally, and was used by members of the “Stop the Steal” movement, which challenged the results of the 2020 election won by President Joe Biden.

The flag was visibly flown by some participants in the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection and was hung outside the office of House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., last fall, according to the Times. Alito, who will soon rule on an election subversion case that could result in the removal of some charges against Trump, was also recently found to have flown anin 2021 by the Times, leading to allegations he skirted rules against showing political bias—though he claimed his wife flew the flag due to a dispute with a neighbor over a political lawn sign.
